Ellen joined Union College as the Chief Information Officer in November 2010. She has spent over 20 years focusing on the applications of technology in support of teaching and learning. Ellen helped build the first Teaching Theater at the University of Maryland in the early 1990s, when Maryland received a grant from the AT&T Foundation. She was instrumental in setting up the support structure for this type of facility to enable faculty members to concentrate on their teaching without worrying about the technology while in this technology-rich environment. Her career at Maryland grew from being the Coordinator of Instructional Technology Support to being the Director of Academic Support. She also served as Interim User Support Director while at Maryland. She has also served as the Instructional Multimedia Coordinator at North Dakota State University, setting up its first University Multimedia Center to help faculty integrate multimedia into their teaching.
